Cohen and Calkins work was also one of the primary works to identify that fibril, a major component of amyloid, is not a collagen. It was also identified that fibrils do not contain high amounts of hyaluronic ac id, making it less soluble in water (1,9). In order to identify if collagen is the primary component of the fibrils, the fibrils were treated with a buffer and collagenase solution as the control and experimental reactions. The collagenase based reaction was incubated at different time periods to identify if there as more growth in the collagenase based solutions. The quantity of the fibrils was found to be roughly the same in the control and the experimental preparations at different time intervals. Ineffectiveness of collagenase indicated that there was no collagen present in the fibrils as in the presence of collagenase, the fibrils would have grown if they had collagen in them (9). Amyloid precursor proteins do not share a common size, sequence or secondary structure, yet the mature fibrils appear to share similar highly organized multimolecular morphology and mechanisms of toxicity (13). This indicated that there is a possible connection in the formation of different types of amyloid fibrils. Sletten et al in their study characterizing amyloid fibril proteins further elabo rated that human amyloid fibrils contain two different components: one soluble and the more heterogeneous component. Insulin, a polypeptide, has long been known to be capable of conversion in vitro to a fibrillar, amyloid-like, form (16). Fibrillary insulin has recently been demonstrated clinically significant localised amyloidosis in microscopic quantities around the needle tip after prolonged subcutaneous infusions of insulin in rats, and in a human diabetic subject (18). In a study done in 1988, major amyloid fibril protein was extracted and, by means of its amino acid composition and amino acid sequence, it was shown to contain intact insulin molecules (15). Diche et al. in their study conducted in 1988 described the amyloid deposits occurring in an insulin-dependent diabetic patient and give the analytical finding of extracted amyloid fibril protein. The lower molecular weight fragment molecules spontaneously polymerize into fibrils. Amyloid P-component was also demonstrable in the deposits, as it has been in every other amyloid (15). The main types of euthanasia It is distinguished as passive and active. It is a hook for an incurable people. They donââ¬â¢t want to consider living against death. Active euthanasia, which is the most argumentative, is permitted in the Netherlands, Belgium and in a couple of USA states. Moreover, it is followed by the phenomenon of Suicidal tourism ââ¬Å"of terminally sick and dying peopleâ⬠in those countries where its legalization was made. Anyway, in most English countries this mercy killing is punishable. The passive type of such condition isnââ¬â¢t forbidden in most of the countries instead of active. The patient simply does not want to continue therapy and prefers to die naturally. For instance, in this case, the patient is mentally sound, and his/her decision is justified. But it has a lot of disadvantages as well. On the one hand, the use of mercy killing ensures the right of the patient to dispose of his life independently, as well as humanity, which allows not enduring unbearable pain, a high positive evaluation deserves respect for the will of the patient who wishes to eliminate the moral and financial burden of his relatives by his departure from life. Of course, the patient himself/herself manages his/her life and decides what is better for him/her, but the medicine does not stand still, every day there are new pills that slow down the effect of the disease, and sometimes even beat it. In addition, medicine has witnessed cases in which some patients defeated incurable diseases and lead a better level of life. The task of the doctor is not just to give the patient to end his/her life, but carefully weigh everything: analyze the situation, make exploratory research, determine the chance for recovery, and improve the condition. From whatever side you look, but injecting a lethal dose of the drug is a murder. Human life is recognized as the highest social value. The easy death procedure can promote committing a crime of physical or psychological pressure on a patient, bribing medical staff, fraud, etc. In todays conditions, euthanasia can turn into a means of killing the lone elder people, disabled children, the patient experiencing incurable illnesses and those for the treatment of which there is a lack of funds. Another argument against euthanasia is the belief that the duty of a doctor is to keep his patient alive at all costs. Physicians are generally introduced to people as angels of life, but by attempting euthanasia they become angels of death, and this in itself dishonors the profession which draws its dignity by being a profession which is committed to the task of preserving the patientââ¬â¢s life. For or against? Active euthanasia is planned remedy tactic that causes death earlier than it would naturally occur. In other descriptive words, it is death on demand when a terminally ill person who is experiencing very severe pain after long deliberate discussions ask for a lethal dose of a drug and consumes it, causing death. In its defense, there are several arguments: It performs one of the important standards of lawââ¬âhumanism. It is humane because it stops the suffering of a terminally sick person. Better calm worthy death than every minute feeling strong, humiliating pain. The hopeless condition and patientââ¬â¢s endless torture also entails the suffering in his surrounding: relatives and friends, caring about him and sympathizing. The desire to die in such a case can be viewed as a desire to relieve the surrounding people. When treatment is helpless, and person lives vegetative life, euthanasia is not seen as a crime, but, on the contrary, as empathy. However, exploratory medicine has a belief that euthanasia can enlarge misdiagnosis. In this way, losing the patientââ¬â¢s life is not sensible. Besides, the legalization of it would lead to unacceptable pressure on disabled, aged and the terminally ill, who would like to live longer, but at the same time do not want to be a useless and heavy burden for society. It can become a serious obstacle to the development of medical knowledge, aimed at finding new therapeutic tools against terminal diseases. Other reasons cited for opting for an easy death have been depression, loneliness or confusion. Recent studies have reported that about 70% of actual decisions to end a life by mercy killing have been hasty and irrational, and contrary to general perceptions, depression and loneliness rather than pain and suffering seem to be the primary factors motivating patients interest in an easy death. Also, patients can be strongly influenced by doctors as the sole source of their information about illness, prognosis and possible interventions. There is an alternative to mercy killing: modern palliative medicine. Specialized palliative care is provided by a multidisciplinary team of specially trained medical staff, psychologists, social workers, spiritual support staff and other specialists as needed, as well as volunteers, close relatives or legal representatives of the patient. This care focuses on relieving pain in patients who are in an extremely difficult condition. Such assistance is provided in hospices, a medical and social institution in which doctors and staff can help to diminish ache. The benefits of it are the following: special attention is paid to the emotional condition of a sick person and his family. The birth of a person, as well as her departure from life, is natural biological processes. à This is considered as pros of palliative medicine. Hospices are aiming to reduce painful living. In any case, such an issue is rather debatable in the modern world. The majority of people are sure that such behavior is against religion and should be forbidden. The only truth is that we cannot judge people as each of us is the master of own life.

Y2K (1192 words) Essay It is hard to believe that two numbers have the potential to turn the eve of the 21st century from a worldwide party into a worldwide economic breakdown. Computers in most industries will have the problem of seeing the year two thousand for the year nineteen hundred. Y2K as some people call is going to be a problem that we all must face. Y2K is essentially a storage problem that early programmers failed to solve successfully. The date format that they stored in their programs is two digits for the month two digits for the day and two digits for the year, this only allows 2 digits for the year 2000 which is 4 digits long. Y2K is going to hit and hit hard. Large corporations are scurrying around trying to get this fixed so it won?t affect them. It is coming down to the end of the wire. The problems Y2K will cause are potentially devastating. If the worst case scenario comes true, stores could be looted and there will be no restocking of shelves. Delivery trucks will have no gas due to fuel pumps being offline because of electricity outages. That?s even if the products can even make it in the trucks due to the companies not even being able to produce any goods. The worldwide cost of Y2K could reach up to $600 billion dollars. Absorbing a good chunk of the worlds available funds from last year up until the millenium. Fixing Y2K is necessary, I never thought I would see the day Bill Gates didn?t have enough money for something. Because of legal statements, companies will have to include the cost of Y2K in their yearly statements. Investors or the people that rely on these companies services need to be aware that some of the year end statements and will be obscure because of the increase in spending. Most companies have prepared for this bug but maybe too late. Some people are not even aware of the problem. Some are even dismissing the problem all together. Organizations in retail and utilities are out of touch with the severity of the situation. Therefore causing th e bills we have to pay overdue by over 100 years. I am thankful that some companies like banks and health services are recognizing the problem and should become or already are Y2K compliant. The stock market will drop I suspect but not completely crash. If everyone gets all of his or her own money out of the bank it will cause a shortage of cash on top of the shortage already caused by the cost of Y2K. Overseas markets may see a problem at the millenium. International mutual funds or stocks of many foreign companies are basically hands off at this point because most foreign companies are still only halfway compliant and it is way passed the point of no return. I know when it comes to money people tend to get worried about its security. That is why I believe that a rush of the banks will happen and I hope it will be recoverable in a timely fashion. Some people in the media are saying that everybody needs to get enough cash to run on for at least a couple of months, but that is nonsen se. If everybody would take just a little cash, but not too much then maybe the banks won?t take a bad hit. If everybody goes and gets a thousand dollars out of the bank, again this could cause some money shortages. The panic will cause most of the problems in the U.S. Banking systems are particularly sensitive to this kind of panic. There are hundreds and thousands of nodes in banking networks. If you Think about how many people use Credit Cards and MAC machines and the possibility that the software in any one of these systems is not working properly it can cause problems anywhere in the network. These problems could range from money not being deposited or ducted from accounts properly, problems with interests and investment situations, or even a complete crash of the network. Testing the solutions for Y2K may be the safest bet we can make in these unsure times. The scariest part of the bug is that not one person has put together a positive prediction of what exactly can occur. Mix ed emotions and fear are running wild now that the New Year could bring a decline of our prospering economy. However, testing the solutions is the only way to ensure that business will flow smoothly into the 21st century. Small business have a lot to worry about because of problems caused by automated shipping companies that aren?t shipping products. These products may be held back because they have expiration dates and UPC#?s to be 99 years old caused by the millenium bug. Since nobody can really tell what will happen some business see a problem with prospering into the next year. Some fear that if their is a problem with vital aspects of their business they may not be able to pull through. Some companies would have to pay millions of dollars to fix their software. Some companies don?t have the time, money or resources to deal with Y2K problems. Even big companies have a dilemma that the only positive way to get around Y2K is to get new machines. New machines are the only way to en sure a clear fix of the Y2K bug. New machines are already compatible and so a company can almost save money by getting new Computers. Most companies cannot replace existing machinery because of the difficulties of starting from scratch. This solution should be considered if a company?s systems are too costly to fix, or if there are not very many systems that need to be fixed. To consider another economic side of Y2K, I would consider unemployment. Unemployment needs to be addressed. A large amount of companies created solely to fix Y2K problems and sort through code will have a severe problem finding work considering that their sole purpose for business had came and passed. It would be like a car salesman working for a dealership with no cars. The demand for the services these companies provide would be in a complete nosedive. Most companies can?t just worry about themselves with this problem because so many businesses rely on each other to make money. If the government would regula te the effort in fixing Y2K things may be easier, but I also realize that they probably have more than enough of their own computers to fix as it is. Y2K and its economic impact have too many different possible alternatives to give a clear and solid prediction. Although the government seems to be very optimistic considering the possibilities. In spite of the fact that Alan Greenspan had to correct himself because his prediction was frightening for investors. It is clear that the chance Y2K brings about the apocalypse is rare but I would expect some hard time and little string of glitches.
